A very rare early First Period Dr Wall Worcester Plate, of circular shape with flattened rim and elegantly dished cavetto, Circa 1752
A very rare early First Period Dr Wall Worcester Plate, of circular shape with flattened rim and elegantly dished cavetto, beautifully painted in the Chinese famille rose palette with a stylised Chinese garden scene with two yellow breasted birds with blue plummage one perched within a sprays of flowering bamboo and the other confronting it and perched on a holed brown rock with peonies in flower to one side, within a border of flowering chrysanthemum and smaller stylised flowers.
One of two surviving examples recorded from the very earliest period of production at the Manufactory of Dr Wall at Worcester. The manufactory located beside the river at Warmestry House and moved there by Dr Wall and his partners after the deed of partnership was signed in November 1751. This extremely rare circular plate shows the excellence of clarity and inspiration of the chinoiserie style perfectly captured byan extremely skilled painter who may have worked enamelling saltglazed stoneware in South Staffordshire. The style of the painting should also be compared to enamelling work seen on white opaque glass from Holt Bridgeman's glass manufactory in Stourbridge from the very early 1750's.
The plate like other pieces of this incredibly early date preceeds general output at the manufactory and was probably made for a collector connoisseur to place within a display within a Chinese room in a country House and therefore is of the greatest rariety and importance. The same hand is also recorded on a trumpet shaped vase. Only one other example recorded in a Private English Collection.
