The Man with the Butterfly Tie has been released to mark the 40th anniversary of the International Ceramics Fair and Seminar, founded by Brian and Anna Haughton in London. The book presents outstanding historical ceramic essays by distinguished scholars. An unparalleled insight into the world of fine ceramics and the dealers who brought academia to the art fairs.

Brian Haughton is one of the world’s leading experts on historical porcelain. His gallery, founded in 1964, specialises in English and European ceramics from the 16th century to the present day. Together with his wife, Anna Haughton, he founded and organised international art fairs in London, New York and Dubai, including, from 1982, the legendary International Ceramics Fair and Seminar, later renamed Art Antiques London. Museum directors and curators from across the globe came to take part in these prestigious events and lectured there.

To mark the 40th Anniversary of its founding, more than forty academics, art dealers and collectors were invited to write a short portrait on outstanding historical ceramics sold in Brian Haughton’s gallery, which has given rise to a wonderful kaleidoscope of unique 18th and 19th century ceramics pieces. In addition, further participants of the fairs and symposia offer engaging insights behind the scenes in a ‘Tributes’ section.
Brian Haughton’s former career as an actor is reflected in the theatrics of the fairs. He is famous for his appearance at the openings, at which he always wore a tie featuring butterflies: he is the man with the butterfly tie.
