
Pair of Paris Vases, Circa 1820
A pair of Paris (Schoelcher) Gold-ground Two-handled Vases signed P. Freund.
Of tapering flattened oval section, with richly gilt eagle’s head and foliage handles, painted with sailing ships before an extensive city harbour with a mountain in the background, one ship flying the Danish flag, the reverse with fishermen landing their catch before a fortified gatehouse, the other vase with a similar scene of ships before a Low Countries port, the reverse with fishermen and merchants at a quayside, between gilt bands of ciselé acorns and stiff-leaves beneath flared necks with anthemion and flowers, on oval spreading stems and rectangular bases with anthemion and foliage on a gilt verniculé ground.
Script marks, one with gilt Schoelcher Boulevard Italien a Paris and the other Schoelcher a Paris.
