Dressed in 17th-century costum and wrapped in a cloak, Milton leans on a column moulded with a relief of the Archangel Gabriel expelling Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, a scene taken from Milton's epic poem 'Paradise Lost' (1667). Milton's left hand holds an open scroll.
