A very Fine Staffordshire Simulated Agateware Teapot and Cover, of slipcast globular shape with applied faceted spout, the applied rounded handle with flattened lower terminal, supported and raised up on three lion mask and paw feet. The clay folded over and over at the kneading stage to produce a simulated Agateware body, in blue, brown and yellow clays. The slightly domed cover with seated Kylin finial.

The shape and form known in saltglazed examples was also to be found richly decorated with famille rose colours and designs of Jacobite significance. The Lion mask and paw feet are also found on the earliest of the raised sauceboats of the ‘Silver Taste’ dating from 1746. See Paul Crane, ‘A Question of Attribution’, ECC Vol 27, 2017 for a discussion of these silver features translated into early English ceramics during the 1740’s.
