Important pair of Meissen Waxwings (Bombycillidae) modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Johann Gottlieb Edher, the birds sitting on raised tree trunks covered with leaves, flowers and a May Beetle. Each naturalistically coloured and modelled in life size.
Augustus The Strong, Elector of Saxony, King of Poland had various animals and birds which were kept in his Royal Menagerie/Aviary at Schloss Moritzburg. J.J. Kaendler created life-sized and near life-sized porcelain animals and birds, many destined for the Japanese Palace of Augustus the Strong. To create them, Kaendler found inspiration from nature and copied from life the birds that were in the Royal Aviary at Schloss Moritzburg.
Waxwings are a family of birds known as (Bombycillidae). They are characterised by their soft plumage, head crest and distinctively patterned wings and tails. They are typically pinkish/brown and pale grey with a black and white eye stripe, a crest and square cut tail. Waxwings are often found in flocks and are known for their smooth, silky appearance and melodious songs.
