A very fine and rare Meissen Rooster Teapot and Cover, modelled by J.J. Kaendler the seated brightly coloured Rooster modelled with closed wings and delineated feathers forming the teapot. The spout which is formed by its neck and head, modelled with longer neck feathers over a neatly painted series of breast feathers. The full cockade of the tail incorporates the small cover which is formed by several simulated shorter tail feathers.
Teapots of this rare form were first modelled by J.J.Kaendler in circa 1734 although there are some earlier models which have the appearance of a more stylised Japanese form of bird, with tiny rabbit finials, these very rare earlier forms are usually decorated in kakiemon colours. A pair from the Lawrence Rockefeller collection was sold at Sothebys in New York in October 2003. Another model that was conceived by Kaendler has the form of a Bantam hen with a small chick on its back forming the finial. For a very colourful model of this rare form see Ulrich Pietsch, ‘A Passion for Meissen’, illustrated no.138 in the catalogue.
