An extremely rare Doccia Dessert Plate, Circa 1780
An extremely rare Doccia Dessert Plate, the circular form moulded in crisp low relief with scrolls enclosing six lobed panels three painted in crimson carmine with groups of fruit, on a powder blue ground enriched with gilded details and gold shells. The centre painted with a scene of a Shepherd and a sheep, wearing classical vestments from antiquity, seated in an Arcadian landscape before trees and italianate buildings.
A similar example from the same service bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Lt. Col. K.Dingwall DSO c.102-1926. The scenes on this service appear to be taken from Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, translated and commented on by Antoine Banier and printed in Paris from 1767-1771. The shape of this plate was first used by Jean-Claude Chambellan Duplessis around 1760.
