A Fine Early Worcester Coffee Cup, of delicate bell shape , Circa 1757
Item No. 904
A Fine Early Worcester Coffee Cup, of delicate bell shape with everted rim and wishbone handle, pencilled in light purple and puce with a chinoiserie scene of figures at animated conversation within a Chinese landscape, one seated beside a covered ginger jar, the other leaning on a staff of office, before a pagoda and date palm, whilst a river landscape extends to the distance, the reverse with a spray of formal oriental flowers, the interior with alternating panels of peonies, other oriental flowers and scrollwork.
This pattern was repeated in the late 1760’s but with a brighter puce, the later pattern lacks the finesse, detail and care shown to great advantage on this very fine piece.
