An interesting Early Worcester Patty Pan, of typical circular shape with flared sides and flattened rim, very carefully painted in underglaze blue with the ‘Bare Tree and Speared Bird’ pattern, showing a Chinese house beside a tree, before a river on whose bank stands a chinaman holding a fishing rod on which perches a bird, within a scrolled and diapered border.
The shape was used for a meat filled patty with a pastry casing, a very popular dish of the period of the mid eighteenth century. The dish could be spiced as the taste or meat required. The dish was served as an accompaniment to the roasted meat courses and served with vegetables flooded with butter sauce.

Mark: Workman’s mark in underglaze blue to the underside of the base.
