A Dunmore Tortoise Teapot and Cover, Circa 1875
A Dunmore Tortoise Teapot and Cover, naturalistically modelled where the body forms the tortoise shell with legs protruding from the sides. The green decorated upturned tail forms the handle while the scaled head with open mouth forms the spout. Atop the cover is a spiral shell which forms the finial.
Further Details: The Dunmore Pottery was established at Dunmore Moss at the estate of the Earl of Dunmore in Stirlingshire, Scotland. From 1866, Peter Gardner took over the family business and experimented with glazes to produce a new type of wares which were exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Queen Victoria purchased Dunmore Pottery at the 1886 Edinburgh International Exhibition. The company closed in 1917.
